Cigna and Milford Hospital Complaint

Being charged ER co-pay I was never in - co-pay codes

Dear Complaint. TV News

Hoping you can rectify a software error in Cigna's billing system which is charging customers incorrectly. I've called all parties involved without satisfaction. This information was sent to the Attorney General today as well as yourselves.

Milford Hospital has 2 facilities, Emergency and Urgent care which you can see from their webpage http://www.milfordhospital.com/page5.html#Walk_In.

Below is the map showing the facilities are in two different locations.

Milford Hospitals definition of Urgent Care right off their webpage:
Urgent Care Center: The Urgent Care Center, which is less than two miles from the Milford Hospital main campus, is for patients who have injuries or illnesses that do not require the intensive, services of the Emergency Center. The center is open 8-7:30 pm weekdays and 8- 5:30 pm weekends. The Center can be reached at 203-876-4101.

Having said that, this is the situation. I went to the Milford Hospital Walk-in clinic on August 9, for a smashed index finger (finger was slammed in a door). The receptionists at the clinic charged me a $20 co-pay, which I paid. Later, in the mail, I received a Milford Hospital bill stating I owed $80. I was completely confused as to why. Looking over the billing statement, which was extremely convoluted and hard to determine what the issue was. No place does it state the co-pay code nor does it state that I received services at the walk-in. I called Milford Hospital for an explanation; they stated I was charged for emergency co-pay. I told them I never was in the emergency. Their reply was that I had to speak to Cigna to ask them to submit a corrected explanation of benefits.

I notified Cigna about the error, they advised me to have Milford Hospital adjust my account. Cigna said that Milford Hospital entered a code of 450 Emergency instead of 456 Urgent Care. I called Milford Hospital again telling them that Cigna said to adjust my account, they refused. Milford Hospital stated that it is an error in Cigna's system. I filed a first-level appeal #9889 and received a letter from Cigna on October 18 stating they will look it over. On November 9, I received a letter stating my appeal was declined and I still owed the $80 balance of the $100 co-pay.

On Columbus Day, my horse stepped on my foot and thought he might have broken my toe(he did). So again, I went to the walk-in, paid my $20 co-pay, and was billed for emergency room visit. So now I have two statements saying I owe $80.00.

I can't be the only person this is happening to. I wonder how many people just pay the amount not knowing it's a mistake. Both Milford Hospital and Cigna are aware of the situation and have done nothing to correct the situation. Possibly they won't ever fix it since they would have to refund a lot of money?

This information has been sent to the Attorney General as well as yourselves. Somebody has got to be able to stop Cigna/Milford Hospital from over charging people.

Greatly appreciate your support
Wendy
