I moved, AT&T service was disconnected/discontinued, continued to pay because of early DSL termination charges. They reinstated account and continued to charge me, even though no activity on account.
At the time of move, I had one month remaining on my DSL contract, ($55 per mo.) It was cheaper to continue payment of service for one more month than pay $200 early termination fee. I saw continuing bill and assumed it was final monies owed and continued to pay. When I realized I was paying for a closed account I stopped paying. AT&T states it is their policy to reconnect service (without notice) if payments continue even though they agree no usage occurred during several months of over-payment. They reported it to credit agency, which dropped my credit score.
After I found out what had happened, they agreed to revised bill to reflect some (one-third) credit for the amount they had continued to charge me after I stopped paying for an account which I was unaware had been reopened by them. And I paid.
However six months later, they have again reported me to the credit agency for the revised final bill which I paid (and for which I have full receipt) which has again seriously dropped my FICA score.
AT&T requires a written agreement to initially establish service. They unilaterally re-establish service and dictate terms thereafter without joint agreement.
