In March 1995, I purchased a Larson storm door (for my front door)from Lowe's in Summerville for a total price of approximately $400. The purchase was based upon the generous warranty which was for 20 years. I also purchased another Larson storm door for my back door around the same time. The back door which was exposed to the weather began to corrode several years later and upon presenting the factory mandated proof regarding the door's condition, I received a new replacement door which was made of a different composition. Fast forward to the front door which was not exposed to the weather; it recently began to corrode. Larson, upon receiving my complaint about this door's condition, mandated proof regarding the front door's condition which I provided. Subsequently, I received a card which stated the door would be replaced minus hardware, glass, etc., but that there would be a $30 charge for said replacement. When I called Larson protesting the $30 charge today, October 2, 2009, I was told by a supervisor at Larson that the warranty had changed about 7 years ago which stated "Larson reserves the right to change/alter their warranties." Nowhere can I find in the wording of my warranty from 1995 such a statement. When pressed as to the validity of an "after the fact" warranty change, I was told that "this is what we are told to say" (to the consumer). As you might deduct, it is not the $30 charge which I am protesting but the principal of the charge and the change in the warranty. In retrospect, I think I will change my mind that the door was not worth $400, but only $200; do you think I can get my money back for changing my mind as to the door's worth? I hardly think so! To further compound my dilemma, I have another Larson door on my home (other than the two aformentioned) which has not yet corroded but with the reputation which has already been established, I'm sure it is only a matter of time. How many others have been involved in the "changed warranty", I wonder? And how many others can't or didn't take the time to protest an inferior product with a changing warranty?
